Enjoying life and avoiding irreversible damage is a real balancing act. Taking a holistic approach to skincare means looking at all aspects of our daily routines, not just the time spent cleansing and exfoliating at the beginning and end of the day. Time outdoors with loved ones makes for a happier life – which contributes greatly to beautiful skin – so we’re all for it!

There’s no need to avoid the sun completely, but there are some things you can do to protect yourself and care for your skin at the same time.

You’ve heard us go on about it over on Instagram (and if you’re a client of ours you’ve definitely heard more than your fair share!), but suncream is, above all else, the number one best skincare product you can use.

Prevention is always better than cure, and this is particularly true when it comes to skin. If you don’t already, it’s time to start wearing a broad spectrum suncream every single day. Even in winter, no matter your skin type, tone, age or where you live.

How do I choose a suncream?

Some of the most important things to consider when choosing a suncream are:

  • UVA rays. They penetrate deeply into our skin, cause ageing changes and skin cancers such as melanoma. The only suncream that will protect us from them is a broad spectrum one. The better the PA (+) rating, the better protected you are.
  • UVB rays. These reach the top layer of the skin and change its colour (hello sunburn). SPF is the rating you’re interested in here. The difference between SPF 15 and 50 is only 5% though, so higher is preferable, but don’t hang your hat on it without considering UVA!

Choosing any suncream that keeps this important information in mind is a big step in the right direction, but we also believe that not all products are created equal when it comes to maintaining beautiful skin. These are our favourites:

Vitamin D

If you’re concerned about Vitamin D, you’re not alone. In fact, much of the population today is now low in Vitamin D. But avoiding suncream is not the way to get around this. Instead try:

  • Spending a few minutes in the sun outside of 11-3pm each day.
  • Make sure you’re getting plenty of Vitamin D through your diet (eggs and fatty fish are a great source).
  • Try supplements if your doctor recommends them.

Sun damage

If you’d like some help with sun damage on your skin, get in touch with us. We can tailor a skincare routine to address any existing damage, and more importantly, avoid future damage. A skin check with a doctor should always be performed to confirm that no pigmented lesions are serious in nature.
